I always dreamed of hosting a talk show. I got my big break as a young intern at K9-TV. Woof Blitzer, host of “Kennel Talk”, came down with cat scratch fever after an interview with a stray cat and the big dogs at the network asked me sit in his chair. I was so nervous I almost drooled on camera, but I was determined to show them what I could do. Now I wag my tail on my own show, interviewing fascinating guests and sharing important issues with my viewers.

Interview with Debi Derryberry

Roxy interviews Debi Derryberry

Roxy: How did you first get into voice acting and how did you become the voice of Jimmy Neutron?

I graduated pre-med at UCLA and decided I didn’t want to go to medical school as much as I wanted to sing country music, so I moved to Nashville, TN to be a country singer and got lots of gigs doing jingles in a kid’s voice. I had an agent who got me a job being a body double for 10-12 year old boys on “Ernest Goes to Camp,” which paid more than waiting tables. One of the mothers on the set said I should be in cartoons and the thought never crossed my mind, so at 23-24 years old I went for it and pursued casting agents in Hollywood. I wrote them letters and sent jingles, and they all responded that I was great but had to live in LA. I got a part at the Tennessee Repertoire Theatre in the play “To Kill A Mockingbird” as Scout…got noticed, so I got a part in the TV series, “Hey Vern, It’s Ernest” playing a twin clown boy. After that I moved back to LA. Ginny McSwain, a great animation voice director, called International Creative Management (ICM) and said they should sign me and they did! So I started booking cartoons. And it’s now been 20 years!

I auditioned with hundreds of other voice actors for Jimmy Neutron and was chosen! Luckily at that time, movie studios didn’t think you needed a mega-movie-star voice to make a good animation movie.

Roxy – Los Angeles, California

Too late! I just read your post, Lexi !

Thanks for thinking of me. It’s not that I’m sensitive, i’m getting too fat to jump up on the couch when I have to do my interviews! I’m trying to eat from a smaller bowl and get more exercise. In the mean time, I’ll be fatter – oops, I mean flattered – to wear your new jeans!
